The Living Meat Grinder by VCR-WOLFE The Living Meat Grinder by VCR-WOLFE
I really wanna do an actual, in-depth reference sheet for my monstersona, Monater Rochol, but alas. Lazy as fuck. I only ever do detached studies of different parts of her.

I was having a chat with one of my bros the other day and I discussed with him about how Monater's eating behavior works.

I also got my bro ~shorty-antics-27 to help me out with some of the anatomy and seeing if it looks ok. ;u;

But anyways, Monater's eating behavior is quite. Wait for it.

Monstrous.

You see, Monater is a rather week little critter. This is why she hangs around the much larger Katapus(the monster I made for Kata but I am redesigning her a little because I can). Monater's jaw muscles are very weak, meaning that she can barely chew. She doesn't even have molars, only false incisors and canines.

Her real dentition lies in the esophagus. Monater's esophagus could be compared to the musculature of a snake. Rather than simply guiding food down the throat, the tooth ridges all throughout the throat act out the action of chewing. For Monater, swallowing and chewing are the same action. Since she cannot chew with her jaws, she picks bite-sized scraps from whatever prey Katapus has disemboweled and eaten; Monater scavenges the leftovers of her companion's meals. She then swallows these chunks of meat entirely whole, though they are rarely larger in comparison to a meat patty.

The muscles in her throat are very reflexive in nature, responding to touch. When she swallows food and it enters the esophagus, the contact it has with the muscles spur them to begin chewing, grinding up the food to be more manageable so that her rather dainty digestive system can more easily break it down. In tandem with grinding, the muscles also pull the food down along with it, as well as allowing gravity to do some of that work as well. This chewing action though, being swallowing as well, means that she cannot breath through her mouth when eating. To make up for that she has further snake-like anatomy. She can breath through her mouth to the esophagus and so-forth, but she also has tubules from the nostrils that run down either side of the esophagus and directly to the lungs. The reflexes for these tubules are connected to her chewing reflexes, so when she swallows, the tubules automatically open up to allow breathing. When not eating, the tubules are sealed to allow normal breathing.

Monater's jaws can open very wide, much like a thylacine, but they do not dislocate. The muscles in the throat are very flexible, though cannot stretch too far. Despite this, it is theoretically possible to fit larger objects down her throat, say, a human arm for example. If said person were to casually shove his arm in, the contact with her esophagus muscles would stimulate them to chew his arm, thus mangling it to shit like some sort of Satan Food Disposal Unit as those muscles are very powerful. However, even though the throat muscles could chew large substances like whole arms, they would not be able to swallow such large items and would only induce vomiting. So in other words it's a horribly unpleasant experience for both the guy's arm as well as Monater herself.

Wow okay I think these things out too much hELP ME.

Sigh I need to make poor Monater a ref sheet.

Very cool, slightly terrifying, and a rather clever idea.

Sometimes I find that I adore these studies as much as any of your finished work. There is just as much work put into them by how much you think through the full functioning of your characters body. Fascinating to say the least

Ahh, thank you! Yeah, they may look rough, but that's mainly because I'm focusing on getting the idea across most of the time. I love thinking.

man i really love all your creature desings (i'm sure i've said that before).
and i love how well-thought-out this is. there's a type of animal that has a similar set-up with tooth-like hooks going further down the throat than usual--i think it's a squid but i can't remember exactly. i saw it in a documentary series where they did dissections of animals. ANYWAY point is Monater actually seems plausible biologically (at least as far as her throat goes).

Eeeeah, thank you.

My original idea for her throat was to give her a second set of jaws, more like a moray eel, but in the end I felt this approach would have been better, hhha.
